Hazards
Routes of Entry: Inhalation:YES Skin:YES Ingestion:NO
Reports of Carcinogenicity:NTP:NO IARC:YES OSHA:YES
Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:INHALATION: MAY RESULT IN DISCOMFORT
SUCH AS DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, DRYNESS, IRRITATION OF THE NOSE, THROAT
OR EYES. ARC RAYS CAN INJURE EYES & BURN SKIN. HEAT RAYS (INFRARED
RADIATION FROM FLAME OR HOT M ETAL) CAN INJURE EYES.
Explanation of Carcinogenicity:NICKEL/CHROMIUM MUST BE CONSIDERED
POSSIBLE CARCINOGENS UNDER OSHA. IARC HAS INDICATED NICKEL.
Effects of Overexposure:LONG TERM (CHRONIC) OVEREXPOSURE TO WELDING
FUMES CAN LEAD TO SIDEROSIS (IRON DEPOSITS IN LUNG) & AFFECT
PULMONARY FUNCTION.
First Aid
First Aid:CALL FOR MEDICAL AID. INGESTION: IF BREATHING IS DIFFICULT,
GIVE OXYGEN. CALL PHYSICIAN. IN CASE OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK DISCONNECT
& TURN OFF POWER/CAN KILL. IF NOT BREATHING, BEGIN ARTIFICIAL
RESPIRATIO N, PREFERABLY MOUTH-TO MOUTH. IF NO DETECTABLE PULSE,
BEGIN EXTERNAL HEART MESSAGE. CALL A PHYSICIAN. IN CASE OF ARC
BURN, CALL PHYSICIAN.
Fire Fighting
Unusual Fire/Explosion Hazard:NON FLAMMABLE. WELDING ARC & SPARKS CAN
IGNITE COMBUSTIBLES & FLAMMABLE PRODUCTS.
Handling
Handling and Storage Precautions:TO DETERMINE THE COMPOSITION/QTY OF
FUMES & GASES TO WHICH WORKERS ARE EXPOSED IS TO TAKE AN AIR SAMPLE
INSIDE THE WELDER'S HELMET IF WORN.
Other Precautions:WEAR HAND, HEAD, & BODY PROTECTION WHICH HELP TO
PREVENT INJURY FROM RADIATION, SPARKS & ELECTRICAL SHOCK. TRAIN THE
WELDER TO KEEP HIS HEAD OUT OF THE FUMES.
Exposure Controls
Respiratory Protection:USE RESPIRABLE FUME OR AIR SUPPLIED RESPIRATOR
WHEN WELDING IN CONFINED SPACE.
Ventilation:USE ENOUGH LOCAL EXHAUST VENTILATION AT THE ARC, OR BOTH,
TO KEEP
Eye Protection:USE FACE SHIELD W/FILTER LENS
Other Protective Equipment:PROVIDE PROTECTIVE SCREENS/FLASH GOGGLES.
ARM PROTECTORS, APRONS, HATS, SHOULDER PROTECTION.
Work Hygienic Practices:TRAIN THE WELDER NOT TO TOUCH LIVE ELECTRICAL
PARTS & TO INSULATE HIMSELF FROM WORK & GROUND.
Supplemental Safety and Health
Chemical Properties
Appearance and Odor:SOLID STAINLESS STEEL WIRE & RODS.
Stability
Stability Indicator/Materials to Avoid:YES
COMPLEX OF IRON, CHROMIUM, NICKEL, SECONDARILY OXIDES OF MANGANESE,
SILICON, MOLYBDENUM, TITANIUM, TANTALUM, COLUMBIUM.
Hazardous Decomposition Products:CO, CO2, OZONE & NITROGEN OXIDES
Disposal
Waste Disposal Methods:DISCARD ANY PRODUCT, RESIDUE, DISPOSABLE
CONTAINER OR LINER IN AN ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE MANNER, IN FULL
COMPLIANCE WITH FEDERAL, STATE, & LOCAL REGULATIONS.
