Reports of Carcinogenicity:NTP:NO IARC:NO OSHA:NO
Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:HELIUM IS ODORLESS AND NONTOXIC, BUT
MAY PRODUCE SUFFOCATION BY DILUTING THE CONCENTRATION OF OXYGEN
IN AIR BELOW LEVELS NECESSARY TO SUPPORT LIFE. PERSONNELINCLUDING
RESCUE WORKERS SHOULD NOT ENTE R AREAS WHERE THE OXYGEN
CONCENTRATIONIS BELOW 19% UNLESS PROVIDED W/SELF CONTAINED
BREATHING APPARATUS.
Explanation of Carcinogenicity:HELIUM IS A SIMPLE ASPHYXIANT AND HAS NO
TLV.
Effects of Overexposure:MAY PRODUCE DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, VOMITING, LOSS
OF CONSCIOUSNESS, & DEATH. AT LOW OXYGEN CONCENTRATIONS
UNCONSCIOUSNESS & DEATH MAY OCCUR IN SECONDS W/O WARNING. EXTENSIVE
TISSUE DAMAGE/BURNS CAN RESULT IN EXPOSURE TO LIQ/COLD HELIUM
VAPORS.

First Aid

First Aid:SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS MAY BE REQUIRED TO PREVENT
ASPHYXIATION OF RESCUE WORKERS. REMOVE PERSON TO NORMAL
ATMOSPHERE. ASSISTED RESPIRATION & SUPP LEMENTAL OXYGEN GIVEN IF
VICTIM IS NOT B REATHING. IF LIQUID OF COLD BOIL OFF GASCONTACTS
WORKER'S SKIN/EYES FROZEN TISSUES SHOULD BE FLOODED/SOAKED W/TEPID
WTR (105-115F;41-46C). DO NOT USE HOT WATER. SHOULD BE SEEN

BOILOFFGAS. FLUSH LIQ SPILL W/WATER TO DISPERSE.VENTILATEENCLOSED
AREAS TO PREVENT FORMATION OF OXYGEN DEFICIENT ATMOSPHERES CAUSED
BY EVAPORATION OF LIQUID HELIUM OR RELEASE OF GASEOUS HELIUM.

Handling

Handling and Storage Precautions:USE SUITABLE HANDTRUCK. AVOID
DRAGGING,ROLLING,OR SLIDING CYLINDERS.KEEP CYLINDERS AWAY FROM
HEAT. DONOT STORE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AREAS.
Other Precautions:SEGREGATE FULL AND EMPTY CLYINDERS. USE ONLY METAL
AND MATERIALS COMPATIBLE WITHEXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURES. AVOID
CARBON STEEL & OTHER METALS WHICH BECOME BRITTLE AT LOW
TEMPERATURES.

Exposure Controls

Respiratory Protection:USE SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS IN OXYGEN
DEFICIENT ATMOSPHERES. CAUTION!! RESPIRATORS WILL NOT
FUNCTION. USE MAY RESULT IN ASPHYXIATION.
Ventilation:NATURAL/MECHANICAL WHERE GAS IS PRESENT. VENTS SHOULD BE
SITUATED TO AVOID HIGHER THAN NORMAL CONCENTRATION OF HELIUM
