Hazards

Health Hazards Acute and Chronic:TARGET ORGANS: N/P. ACUTE - NITROGEN
IS DEFINED AS A SIMPLE ASPHYXIANT. OXYGEN LEVELS SHOULD BE
MAINTAINED AT GREATER THAN 18 MOLAR PERCENT AT NORMAL ATMOSPHERIC
PRESSURE WHICH IS EQUIVALENT TO A PAR TIAL PRESSURE OF 135 MMHG
(ACGIH, 1985-86). NITROGEN IS NONTOXIC BUT THE LIBERATION OF A
LARGE AMOUNT IN A CONFINED AREA COULD DISPLACE THE AMOUNT OF OXYGEN
IN AIR NECESSARY TO SUPPORT LIFE.
Effects of Overexposure:EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE TO HIGH CONCENTRATIONS SO
AS TO DISPLACE THE OXYGEN IN AIR NECESSARY FOR LIFE MAY INCLUSE
ANY, ALL OR NONE OF THE FOLLOWING: LOSS OF BALANCE OR DIZZINESS,
TIGHTNESS IN THE FRONTA L AREA OF THE FOREHEAD, TINGLING OF
THETONGUE, FINGERTIPS OR TOES, WEAKENED SPEECH LEADING TO THE
INABILITY TO UTTER SOUNDS, RAPID REDUCTION IN THE ABILITY TO
PERFORM MOVEMENTS, REDUCED CONSCIOUSN ESS OF THE SURROUNDINGS,
LOSS OF TACTILE SENSATIONS, HEIGHTENED MENTAL ACTIVITY. THERE ARE
NO DEFINITE WARNING SYMPTOMS.

First Aid

First Aid:PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IS MANDATORY IN ALL CASES OF
OVEREXPOSURE TO NITROGEN. RESCUE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH
SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS. INHALATION: CONSCIOUS PERSONS
SHOULD BE ASS ISTED TO AN UNCONTAMINATED AREA AND INHALE FRESH AIR.
QUICK REMOVAL FROM CONTAMINATED AREA IS MOST IMPORTANT. UNCONSCIOUS
PERSONS SHOULD BE MOVED TO AN UNCONTAMINATED AREA, GIVEN
MOUTH-TO-MOUTH RESUSC ITATION AND SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN. FURTHER
TREATMENT SHOULD BE SYMPTOMATIC AND SUPPORTIVE.

Fire Fighting

Extinguishing Media:NONFLAMMABLE, INERT GAS

Accidental Release

Spill Release Procedures:EVACUATE ALL PERSONNEL FROM AFFECTED AREA. USE
APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT. IF LEAK IS IN CONTAINER OR
CONTAINER VALVE, CONTACT YOUR CLOSEST SUPPLIER LOCATION OR CALL THE
EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NU MBER LISTED FOR THE MANUFACTURER OR
SUPPLIER.

Handling

Handling and Storage Precautions:STORE IN COOL, DRY, WELL-VENTILATED
AREA, AWAY FROM HEAVILY TRAFFICKED AREAS AND EMERGENCY EXISTS.
CYLINDERS SHOULD BE STORED UPRIGHT AND FIRMLY SECURED. STORAGE AREA
TEMPERATURES SHOULD NOT EXCEED 13 0F (54C). SEPARATE FULL FROM
EMPTY CYLINDERS. USE A FIRST IN FIRST-OUT INVENTORY SYSTEM.
Other Precautions:USE ONLY IN WELLVENTILATED AREAS. DO NOT DRAG, SLIDE,
OR ROLL CYLINDERS. USE A SUITABLE HAND TRUCK FOR CYLINDER MOVEMENT.
USE A PRESSURE REDUCING REGULATOR WHEN CONNECTING TO LOWER PRESSURE
SYSTEM. DO NOT HEAT CYLINDER TO INCREASE DISCHARGERATE. AVOID
BREATHING GAS. USE A TRAP IN DISCHARGE LINE TO P REVENT BACK FLOW.

Exposure Controls

Respiratory Protection:POSITIVE PRESSURE AIR LINE WITH MASK OR
SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS SHOULD BE AVAILABLE FOR
EMERGENCY USE.
Ventilation:LOCAL EXHAUST: TO PREVENT ACCUMULATION OF HIGH
CONCENTRATIONS SO AS TO REDUCE THE OXYGEN LEVEL IN THE AIR TO LESS
THAN 18 MOLAR PERCENT.
Protective Gloves:ANY MATERIAL
Eye Protection:SAFETY GOGGLES OR GLASSES.
Other Protective Equipment:SAFETY SHOES.
Work Hygienic Practices:OBSERVE ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, WARNINGS, AND
INSTRUCTIONS AFFIXED TO CYLINDER/VALVE ASSEMBLY AND INSTRUCTIONS
FOR APPARATUS USING THIS ASSEMBLY.
